Article Title: Large panther killed on I-75 in Lee Co.
Media Source: News-Press (Florida)
An large adult male Florida panther was killed on Interstate 75 early this morning, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported.

The animal was struck 1/2 mile north of State Road 82 sometime after midnight, said Capt. Denis Grealish.

“Obviously the panther was attempting to cross the road,” Grealish said. “Death would have been instantaneous. It was stuck in the head at a high rate of speed, possibly by a large truck and was pretty much mangled.”

Florida panthers are among the most endangered animals in the United States. The adult population is about 80.

Many have been radio-collared so scientists can monitor their movements, but this panther was not collared.

This was the fifth Florida panther killed by traffic in 2006.

“It’s just sad that a big cat would be killed on the side of the road like that,” Grealish said. “It’s another indication what happens when you try to mix development and natural critters. Sooner or later, something’s got to give.”
