Speak Out Against Killing of Mountain Lions in Lake Mead National Recreation Area
Your letters and calls today can help stop the indefensible killing of mountain lions on your public land before it begins.
Up to ten mountain lions could be killed on federal public land in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area this spring under a plan put forth by the Arizona Game and Fish Department and being considered by the National Park Service. If this proposal is approved, the killing will be done by a predator hunter hired by AZGFD.
With no information available on the resident lion population, this action could even result in the killing of all mountain lions in the affected part of Lake Mead NRA. As the top predator on this landscape, the mountain lion is crucial for the health and integrity of the entire ecosystem.
Ultimate authority for management of wildlife in the Lake Mead NRA rests with the National Park Service, whose mission requires it to conserve wildlife and forbids it from managing predators to increase populations of hunt-able species. Yet the Arizona Game and Fish Department, whose mission includes manipulating wildlife populations to benefit recreational hunters, wants to kill the cougars to boost numbers of desert bighorn sheep on these federal lands.
Please send a letter or call the NPS today and ask them to prohibit the killing of mountain lions in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. MLF will keep you updated about other actions you can take as we learn more. |
