Mountain lions were extirpated in Nebraska before the end of the 19^th century. Now, almost a hundred year later, the species is starting to return to its native habitat. Since 1991, when the first of the returning lions was shot in Sioux County, there have been 93 confirmed sightings--eight of which resulted in the death of a lion. The Nebraska Legislature now wants to list mountain lions as Predators and allow them to be killed with as little forethought or concern as that of other "pests" such as raccoons or skunks.

This is just the first step in allowing them to be hunted for sport.

To help save mountain lions in Nebraska, contact one or more of the Senators on Nebraska's Natural Resources Committee. Ask them to oppose Legislative Bill 747. Tell them you want mountain lions in your state, and request that mountain lions be listed for protection under Nebraska's Nongame and Endangered Species Conservation Act.
